Happy New Year!
I decided to take a brief blog hiatus so I could focus on being with my friends and family and not worry about everything that blogging entails. I forgot how time consuming blogging can be. I hope everyone had a good Christmas/holiday/ and well deserved time off. It helps to have a few days off and reset from the business of work and being an adult.
Every new year, I always sit down and write down New Year resolutions that I know I’ll forget about. This year I decided I wanted to change that. I spent a lot of time reflecting on the past year and the challenges that I faced and what I really wanted to work on this year and it came down to one thing: I want to be a better friend.
Friendship is really hard and something that is incredibly fluid and ever changing. There are periods of our lives where we are incredibly close with some people and as we grow older we grow apart from those friends and we make new friends. This is normal, but for some of those friendships that you have cultivated and that you have shared time and memories with, there is an inherent desire to want to maintain that friendship.
I’m going to work harder at being more present, being better at making time for friends and being there for them when they need me. However, it’s okay to also say that a friendship isn’t beneficial and to let it fade away. I did a lot of that this past year, realizing I didn’t want to put energy into friendships that didn’t reciprocate or weren’t positive. I’ve spent too much time wondering why people stop talking to me or why a friendship fizzles out to worry about it now. I spent a lot of time this year wasting my time on people who, I’ve come to realize, have no interest in being my friend. They ghost until it’s convenient for them, or until they need something from me. As I get older, I realize I don’t have the time or energy to waste time on such trivial friendships. I’m going to work on friendships that are meaningful and important to me, and that’s my focus this year.
I’m excited for the new year, for a fresh start and to be a better friend.
